Hello Jefferson Middle School Parents and Students:
My name is Mike Matteson, the principal of Jefferson Middle School. I am from Whitewater, Wisconsin and graduated from UW-Whitewater in 2001 with a degree in special education. After graduating, I took my first teaching job at Marshall Middle School in Janesville, WI. I spent six years as a special education teacher before transitioning to the role of a program support teacher in special education working across the district in Janesville. Marshall Middle School created a dean of students position in the spring of 2014, and I was honored to return to Marshall in that capacity. After a little over a year as the dean, I became the assistant principal and served in that position until becoming the principal at Jefferson Middle School in 2021.
Growing up in the area, I always had a high regard for the city of Jefferson and the Jefferson School District. My wife, Rebecca, is a teacher in the Milton School District, and our two daughters Abigail and Makenna attended school there. As a family, we have always enjoyed the area and plan to remain living and working here.
I am honored to continue my journey as an administrator in the Jefferson School District and to serve the students, parents, and staff of Jefferson Middle School. I believe strongly that the public schools are vital to creating and sustaining strong, functioning communities and societies.
We have a lot to look forward to this coming school year! Please know that when students come to JMS each day, they will be greeted by and working with positive and caring people, who truly embody the district’s mission of “Empowering futures together." I look forward to working with you to meet our vision of “All students positively impact society."
